Do Chiropractic Adjustments Have to Crack to Work?

If you’ve ever had a chiropractic adjustment, you may associate it with the familiar “pop” or “crack” that sometimes occurs. Some people love hearing it, while others would rather avoid it altogether. But does an adjustment actually have to make a sound to be effective?

The short answer is no. That popping sound is not a measure of whether an adjustment worked.

What Causes the Popping Sound?

The sound you sometimes hear during an adjustment comes from changes within a joint as it moves. When the joint surfaces separate quickly, pressure changes within the joint fluid can lead to the formation of a gas cavity—a process known as cavitation.

It may sound dramatic, but the noise itself isn’t the purpose of an adjustment.

In fact, research examining spinal manipulation has found that people can experience improvement whether or not an audible pop occurs.

No Pop Doesn’t Mean No Adjustment

It’s easy to assume that a louder adjustment must have accomplished more, but sound isn’t a reliable way to judge what happened.

Different chiropractic techniques also produce very different experiences. Some involve hands-on adjustments that may occasionally result in a popping sound. Others use much lower forces and may produce little or no joint noise at all.

At Affinity Chiropractic, we use Activator Methods®, a low-force, instrument-assisted chiropractic technique. The Activator instrument delivers a quick, controlled force to a specific area without requiring the twisting or forceful movements people sometimes associate with traditional chiropractic adjustments.

That means you may receive an adjustment without hearing a single crack.

What Matters More Than the Sound?

Rather than focusing on whether an adjustment makes noise, we look at how your body is moving and functioning and how you respond to care.

Every patient is different. Your age, comfort level, symptoms, health history, and the area being treated can all influence which type of chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

For people who feel nervous about being “cracked,” knowing that chiropractic adjustments don’t necessarily have to produce that sound can make the experience much more comfortable.

Chiropractic Care Doesn’t Have to Be Dramatic

A chiropractic adjustment doesn’t need to be loud to accomplish its intended purpose. The popping sound that sometimes occurs during manipulation is simply something that can happen when a joint moves—it isn’t the goal of treatment.
